Any object that doesn’t serve any purpose other than ‘putting on a show for other people’ is a prop. Books that sit there to make it look like a library and give the impression that you are well read – props. My mother’s fancy china collection that comes out during dinner parties – props. A box in the back of my closet with toy cameras and useless pretty kitchen items – props. All there for a show. Why do we own props ? The culture we live in sold us on the idea perhaps ? I have no idea. It has gotten worse since instagram. Every image has same image background, cups, plants, weathered wooden planks, etc. It is a Kinspiracy ! Its time to let mine go.

If you look at my older photos on instagram, I had this urge to post pictures of tea cups and colorful breakfasts. My mother and I are working on a cookbook of family kitchen secrets with my grandma and great grandma as collaborators. I have a few props for pictures. They hardly get touched, live in a box, were a waste of money and space, are fragile, don’t work ( marble mortar and pestle anyone? ),….. What was I thinking ?

Source : My past life staging silly things on my instagram.

.

The other day, I watched a youtuber feature a marble plank and was using it as a cutting board because strawberries look good on it. She said she got it because it suited her aesthetics and is white in color. Being an ardent knife lover, it was like nails on the chalk board watching her use it. I couldnt bear it. Its ruining the knife ! A million people watch her videos. Sigh ! This generation of so called influencers are really silly for my taste. Everything is staged. What happened to creativity and authenticity ? Did we loose it in the name of ‘good photos’ and a race to become internet famous ? I do not want to go down this path. I don’t need followers or free products. I will never do a giveaway which asks people to follow me on social media. It is not giving if you want something in return.

*My props that solely exist for pictures. I finally let them go. Yes, the background is black paper, another prop.

Home decor and props – have a fine line that I no longer can see. How can I make a space beautiful ? They say have nothing in your home that you don’t believe to be useful or beautiful. What if the useful is beautiful? Does that eliminate the need to collect the useless beautiful objects ? It did, for me. I needed storage jars. My copper ones look beautiful. My cutting boards are wooden and have aged beautifully. My tiny vase holds a leaf/wild flowers from my everyday walk. We have a map in our living room for inspiration for us. Plants, books, weathered wood and colorful vegetables are my choice of home decor. They are enough.

Question : Are you tired of seeing props all over the internet too ? Do you own props ? Do you roll your eyes at props or have you gotten used to it all ? This is my most embarrassing confession. Please do share if you have been on this boat at any point in life.

.

P.S : Please don’t be offended if you find the things I let go useful or beautiful. I am talking about the end of a staged life for myself. I don’t know anyone else’s needs or lifestyle.
